Acedemic Section – Clinical Metings of SSWB
The Spine Society of West Bengal was founded in 2015 after the resounding success of ASSICON 2014 with the main focus on promoting academic activities through clinical meetings and seminars on topics related to Spine Surgery.
The society promotes quarterly clinical meetings usually based on a topic related to spine. The format of these one / two – hour meetings was predominantly interactive. Half of it was didactic in nature with a series of 4 or 5 lectures followed by a discussion session. The rest half of it was based on case-based discussion. In this part of the meeting, fully worked up interesting cases were discussed threadbare with a highly experienced faculty. The aim was to dissect out a particular area of spine so that specific take-home messages could be served.
Down the years, one of these 4 clinical meetings was tagged along with the West Bengal Orthopedic Association Conference (WBOACON) in which we had a one – hour session called the “SSWB Session”. Usually held just before lunch-time on a Saturday morning, it attracts a large section of orthopedic surgeons attending the meeting.
This session starts off with the prestigious “SSWB Oration”, in which a renowned speaker of national fame is invited to deliver a lecture on a topic of his choice. The speaker is introduced by the President of the SSWB and after the oration a plaque and a memento is handed over to him. In the past, SSWB Oration has been delivered by stalwarts like Dr Anil Jain, Past President of Indian Orthopedic Association (IOA), and numerous Past Presidents of Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) namely Dr Shekhar Bhojraj, Dr Ram Chaddha, Dr Harvinder Singh Chhabra, etc. Followed by this oration, there is a session on case-based discussion on a relevant topic with threadbare discussion.
During the last few years, we have successfully held clinical meetings in many parts of West Bengal including all state medical colleges in Kolkata and also in Burdwan. A few of them were live surgical demonstrations like those conducted in R. G. Kar Medical College and Burdwan Medical College. Many of the private institutes of Kolkata like Peerless Hospital, Medical Superspecialty Hospital and Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata have come forwards for this purpose and we have organized these meetings in these hospitals with great success.
